Flying at a speed of 61,200 km/h, asteroid 2022 FD1 was even closer to the Earth’s surface than the GPS satellites but did not.

Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky discovered asteroid 2022 FD1 on March 25, just hours before it passed 8,700 km above Earth’s surface. He is also the discoverer of small asteroids 2022 EB5 two hours before hitting Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 63,700 km/h on March 11.

2022 FD1 is even closer to Earth’s surface than a GPS satellite flying in mid-Earth orbit at an altitude of about 20,200 km. However, this asteroid poses no danger to nearby people based on altitude – astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) at an altitude of 400 km.

Several other astronomers around the world are also observing 2022 FD1 as it passes at a speed of about 61,200 km/h. This asteroid is the size of a refrigerator, roughly the size of 2022 EB5. Asteroid 2022 EB5 plunges into the atmosphere and burns over Iceland.

In terms of distance, 2022 FD1 has the 13th closest approach of a near-Earth object recorded in the NASA database. This data supports more recent observations as technology improves and helps astronomers detect more objects, including small ones, in the space around Earth.

Most of the asteroids in the solar system move along a giant belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter called the Asteroid Belt. This area is estimated to contain more than 200 asteroids with a diameter greater than 100 km. In addition, there are 1.1 – 1.9 million asteroids with a diameter of more than 1 km and millions of smaller asteroids, according to NASA.
