A total of 21 insurers are conducting separate investigations and are also involved in search and rescue operations, CIRC said.
Compensation for families could be as high as 400,000 yuan ($62,800) per victim. However, the amount of compensation for each victim’s family will vary depending on whether they have purchased insurance for the flight.
According to China Eastern Airlines, families of passengers who paid about $4.7 for travel insurance will receive about $314,000 in compensation in the event of a fatal disaster. Families can get double this amount if passengers have purchased a $15.7 insurance plan.
The maximum compensation under the law has increased significantly from 70,000 yuan ($10,995) in 2006. Still, many people criticize this amount as too little. In fact, airlines often compensate more.
