The American company Lasso Loop developed the Lasso – a device that helps users recycle garbage at home, clean reported on March 23. The test prototype was unveiled at the CES 2022 consumer electronics show in Las Vegas in January.

The current prototype Lasso looks like a big gray box and uses the same amount of electricity as a mid-range washer. With a height of more than 150 cm, this device is still a bit inconvenient to place in the kitchen. However, according to Lasso Loop chief technology officer Phil Sanders, the final version will be more compact.

Lasso accepts and sorts 7 materials: PET and HDPE plastics, brown, green and clear glass, aluminum cans and steel. After the user places the object in the machine, sensors and cameras check if the object can be recycled. In addition to assessing the size and shape of an item, the camera also looks for barcodes to help identify the type of material. If the material does not match or there are other problems, the machine will refuse to accept.

Upon receiving the item, Lasso will clean it to remove any contaminants and labels. Labels are stored in separate compartments and need to be disposed of regularly by the user. After cleaning, the material is sent to a processor to be crushed and disposed of in a separate container at the bottom.

“When we think about recycling, we often assume that green, clear, or brown glass is all glass. But these are actually different materials and must be stored separately for proper recycling,” explains Dominique Leonard, head of marketing at Lasso Loop. .

Once the materials are sorted, crushed and filled with containers, the user can communicate with the Lasso Loop via the app. The company will collect and resell the material to manufacturers.

Lasso is expected to have a pre-order price of $3,500. The device will be launched as part of a pilot program in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2023 and extended to further outreach in 2024.
