Satellite image of landing craft on fire in Ukrainian port

New satellite imagery provided by Maxar Technologies shows the lander on fire and partially submerged in Berdyansk, southern Ukraine.

Satellite image taken by Maxar released on March 25 shows smoke and flames rising from the lander anchored in the port city of Berdyansk, on the Azov coast. The ship was also partially sunk and the fire spread to the merchant ship moored next to it.

The second photo also shows the tank burning but at a wider angle, including the harbor, and clouds of white smoke rising from another location.

Ukraine previously said that a Russian Alligator-class landing craft was hit by its forces on March 24. “The ships attacked in Berdyansk can carry up to 20 tanks, 45 armored vehicles and 400 paratroopers,” said Ukrainian deputy defense minister Anna Malyar. “This is a huge target that our military has hit.”

However, Ukraine did not specify the type of weapon used or how it attacked the Russian landing craft.

A day later, the Pentagon said the ship was attacked while delivering supplies to the Russian military in the city of Mariupol. Videos on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing from the dock area, as well as several accompanying explosions. Two other Russian amphibious ships, Tsesar Kunikov and Novocherkassk, immediately left port.

Russia has not yet commented on this information. The day before, Russia’s RT channel reported the ship Orsk docked in the port of Berdyansk. Drive editor Thomas Newdick said there was no evidence to determine exactly what caused the fire in the Berdyansk port.

Russia has been carrying out a military operation in Ukraine since February 24 and the fighting shows no signs of abating. Russian troops have taken control of the large city of Kherson and several smaller targets such as Melitopol. The Russian military said on March 25 that it had completed the first phase of its military operation in Ukraine and was focusing its efforts on achieving the main goal of liberating the Donbass.

However, Russia is facing resistance in key targets such as the cities of Kharkov, Mariupol and the capital Kiev… Kiev and Western officials said on March 23 that Russian units had been pushed back into the area. defensive position.
