Some Chinese smartphones use this chip with potential security and privacy vulnerabilities
Kryptowire is a provider of cloud-based mobile privacy and security solutions. The company constantly monitors security flaws and privacy issues on smartphones, PCs, and other devices. Now, the company has found a pretty serious security and privacy flaw.
This new vulnerability affects many mobile devices using the Unisoc chip of the Chinese manufacturer of the same name. A few years ago, that didn’t make much sense to the majority of Android users. However, Unisoc’s chip sales have grown exponentially thanks to partnerships with companies like Realme, Oppo, Xiaomi, Nokia, etc. Currently Unisoc has occupied an important position in the low-cost smartphone segment. .
Unisoc chip has a serious vulnerability
The chipset has a flat surface, and if exploited, it would allow hackers to get hold of user data and device functionality.
It affects smartphones with UNISOC SC9863A chipset. Specifically, this chip is present on some recent Nokia and Realme smartphone models.
According to Kryptowire, the vulnerability allows attackers to gain access to system and call logs, text messages, contacts, and other private data. They can also record a video of the device screen or use an external camera to record a video or even remotely operate the device, modifying or deleting data.
Kryptowire has reported the issue to the Chinese chip maker. Kryptowire also sends alerts to device manufacturers using affected chipsets as well as service providers.
The warning has been in place since December 2021. Kryptowire hopes Unisoc will fix this or simply discontinue the Unisoc SC9863A as it is relatively old. Besides, Unisoc can also use the report to check other chipsets in the portfolio. The big question now is whether OEMs have patched the security holes.
It is expected that smartphones with vulnerabilities on Unisoc’s chips will need a system update. Most likely Nokia will soon roll out a fix for the affected devices.
Security and privacy flaws are something that can happen to any chipset manufacturer, and Unisoc is no exception. After all, the company is trying to be the best chipset maker for mobile device manufacturers inside and outside China.
