As of March 2022, the domestic market has 06 airlines in Vietnam currently operating an average of 55-60 domestic routes connecting Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City with 19 local airports according to the nationwide network of trunk, inter-regional and intra-regional routes.

Based on the situation of international air transport operation, following the direction of the Government, the National Steering Committee on Covid-19 prevention and control, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Transport, the CAAV actively evaluates and organizes discussed with the aviation authorities of partners to reconnect regular international passenger flights with markets that had direct flights to Vietnam before the Covid-19 epidemic.

In addition to markets that have been deployed and exploited regularly in January 2022 such as Japan, Korea, China, Taipei (China), flights to Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, the United States, France, Germany, UK, Russia are exploited with increasing frequency according to the schedule right in February 2022.

Airlines will fully reopen after March 15, 2022. As for the route to Russia, the CAAV has reported to the Ministry of Transport that Vietnam Airlines suspends the operation of the route to Russia as a reason of force majeure to avoid possible unfortunate risks.

The Department of Transport to the Ministry of Transport proposes to send a document to the Ministry of Transport of Russia as well as request the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to notify relevant Russian agencies about the reason why Vietnam Airlines suspends flight operations. At the same time, the CAAV has sent a document to the Russian Aviation Authority to notify specifically about this content and is ready to grant operating licenses to Russian airlines to operate to Vietnam upon request.

As of March 2022, the international aviation market has 23 foreign and Vietnamese airlines (Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airaways) operating to/from 20 countries and territories.

Compared to the period of 2019 (before the Covid-19 epidemic), there are still 8 countries that have not reopened regular flights to and from Vietnam, including Brunei, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Macao, Finland, Italy, and Switzerland. . Airlines operate 67 routes to/from Vietnam, mainly to/from Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat international airports.

In the following period, opening from March 15-21, 2022, Singapore is the airline operating with the largest frequency of 45 round-trip flights/week, increasing 2 flights compared to the week before opening for tourism and reaching 36% compared to the previous week. same period in 2019.

The number of passengers transported between Vietnam and Japan is the highest at 10.3 thousand passengers among the countries currently operating (reaching 18.1%/total passengers). It is expected that from April 2022, there will be more routes from Singapore, Taiwan and Korea to Da Nang.

Expected throughput of airports in the first quarter: international passengers will reach 321,000, up 176.2% over the same period in 2021; International cargo throughput reached 292 thousand tons, up 21.1% over the same period in 2021.

Expected transportation of Vietnamese airlines in the first quarter: international passenger transport will reach 141.6 thousand passengers, up 441% over the same period in 2021; international freight transport reached 38,000 tons, up 113.9% over the same period in 2021.

As for the international transportation market share of Vietnamese airlines in the first quarter, passenger transport is expected to reach 44%; freight reached 13%.

The Government’s promulgation of Resolution No. 32/NQ-CP on March 15, 2022 has created favorable conditions for international passenger transport to be smooth and domestic passenger transport to be restored, contributing to increase the volume of international passenger and freight transport in the first quarter of 2022. However, the aviation industry is currently facing difficulties due to high gasoline prices. This also puts pressure on increasing costs for airlines operating air transport.
