Set in the years of the end of the Great Depression in America until the beginning of World War II, nightmare gang revolves around the journey of con artist Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper). Stanton and his girlfriend Molly (Rooney Mara) both disguise themselves as psychics, possessing the ability to read other people’s minds to trick the rich and superstitious.

The costumes in this film are 1940s inspired with deep undertones, perfect for the neo-noir genre (modern black films – films with thrilling and sensational content). Luis Sequeira said the challenge in costume creation for this project was to present two settings: a popular carnival and Chicago’s lavish upscale world. He talks to Variation: “The world of carnival goes back to the Post-Recession era. Since people don’t have much money, their stuff is just second-hand stuff. Meanwhile, rich characters emerge with trendy styles” .

Carnival costumes are made of dyed cotton, wool, velvet and denim. Everything is new but has a wear and tear effect, as if it had been there for 15 years. In the film, Stanton sticks to a well-designed neoclassical outfit. Sequeria said to Variation she was given a vintage 1939 outfit by the British government. The designer asked a tailor to take samples from them and started making suits for Stanton.

While Stanton changes a lot of costumes, symbolizing the ups and downs of each character, Molly’s style changes quite a bit. During festivals or at city sights, she wears a red dress, conveying the message that Molly isn’t throwing everything in the past like Stanton did.
