IMO is an annual international math competition for high school students. Since 1974, Vietnam started participating in IMO and was the first Asian country to participate in this competition. Throughout the years, our team has won numerous awards, from Gold to Bronze, and extra prizes.
The names that came out of IMO also became big names in the field of Mathematics, achieving success in their later careers. Among them, it is impossible not to mention Nguyen Tien Dung – Gold Medalist at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1985.

Nguyen Tien Dung was born in 1970, in Hanoi, math class A0 of General University (now University of Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University). From grades 10-11, he read advanced math books on number theory, analysis, and algebra.
In 1985, at the age of 15, he passed the IMO team selection exam and joined five other students at the 26th IMO in Finland. At the IMO competition, he won a gold medal with a score of 35/42. So far, Nguyen Tien Dung is still the youngest Vietnamese student to achieve this achievement.
In 1986, Nguyen Tien Dung went to the Soviet Union to study at the Department of Mathematics – Mechanics, Lomonosov University. At the end of year 2 and beginning of year 3, he worked under the guidance of professor AT Fomenko. By the last years of university, he had 4 scientific articles (including 2 articles with his mentor) published in the prestigious math journal of the former Soviet Union, Russian Math. Surveys, Adv. Soviet Math.

After graduation, he worked at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. In 1994, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis in mathematics entitled “Symplectic topology of integrable Hamiltonian systems” under the guidance of Michèle Audin at the University of Strasbourg. For a time, Nguyen Tien Dung worked in Montpellier, France, before moving back to become a full professor at the University of Toulouse, France.
In 2007, he was awarded the title of First Class Professor by the French National Commission on Universities (CNU), at the age of 37, and in 2015, he was awarded the title of Special Professor.
It is known that Professor Nguyen Tien Dung works in many fields of mathematics including: Differential geometry, simpletic geometry and Poisson geometry, ergodic theory and dynamical systems, mathematical physics, mathematical methods in finance. , complexity theory… With his prestige, he was invited to be a member by many review boards for professors in France, the US and Hong Kong (China).
In addition, Professor Nguyen Tien Dung used to hold positions of deputy director and director of the Institute of Basic Mathematics as well as in charge of the master’s program in basic mathematics at the University of Toulouse for a number of years.
He has more than 40 scientific works published in prestigious international journals such as Annals of Mathematics, Annles de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées, Advances in Mathematics, Journal of Differential Geometry…
