‘Marketing is not a good job’

According to Mr. Tang Gia Hai Lam – Deputy General Director of YouNet Group, the core goal of marketing is business activities, instead of making it good as many young people think.

At the 6th issue of the UniPrep chain with the theme “Marketing training – new context, new trends”, Mr. Tang Gia Hai Lam and Ms. Le Huynh Phuong Thuc – General Director of Guardian Vietnam retail chain; Ms. Luu Thanh Huyen – Director of Human Resources, Capacity Development and L’Oréal Vietnam, shared about the career path, the skills required and how to define a career for young marketers.

According to the speakers, after graduation, students studying marketing have many options to develop their career. Including in-house marketing (clinent), ie communication for the business you are doing. In addition, he works for agencies and provides marketing and communication solutions for partners and customers.

Mr. Tang Gia Hai Lam and Ms. Le Huynh Phuong Thuc followed these two directions and both started from the position of trainees at large corporations to receive proper training and recognize activities in the profession.

Besides, the host of the program, Assoc. Dr. Tran Ha Minh Quan also said, young people can also come from a small branch, serving for marketing such as market research, business (salesman)… to gain more experience and understanding about customers. goods and industries.

According to Ms. Luu Thanh Huyen, the market demand is increasing, the number of students studying marketing is also very large. However, there are not many high-quality human resources that can meet the needs of business people.

Part of the reason comes from the one-way point of view, not understanding the challenges in the profession of young people. Ms. Phuong Thuc said, many of you think “marketing profession sounds luxurious” and seems to make a lot of money. In fact, this profession is very selective and has a short lifespan. After 10 years, marketers need to think about their next path to be able to compete with the competition in the industry

“Actually, any profession is ‘luxurious’, has a place and can make good money if you are good. Marketing is beautiful but also very harsh. Therefore, you often choose the right major to be able to study. promote strengths,” she affirmed.

With the digital technology era, communication is multi-dimensional, interactive and user-experienced. Meanwhile, these things change constantly, quickly, posing an additional difficulty for marketers. You may experience fomo psychology, fear of missing information, not keeping up with the changing pace of society.

Thus, in order not to become a “gap” in the industry market, Mr. Hai Lam advised young people to equip themselves with self-study skills and update external developments. However, this constant innovation is both a difficulty and an opportunity for students. You can grasp information very quickly with the help of technology. What’s important is what to do with those things and how the system is not out of step with the marketing profession.

According to Deputy General Director of YouNet Group, a professional knowledge base will help marketers do this because the ultimate goal of marketing to achieve is business results for that business. Young people should not misunderstand marketing as doing well. This profession serves the company, the core of marketing must still be business.

From a recruiter’s perspective, L’Oréal Vietnam and Human Resources Director said that she also appreciates candidates’ core competencies, backgrounds and qualities. “Experts” and “hands-on” can both come up with ideas, however, a person with basic knowledge will come from data analysis, behavior, habits and insights of other people. use… instead of feeling like there’s something good on the outside. All marketing activities need to help the business activities of the business.

Thus, employers can look at candidates in two aspects: qualities, sensitivity to consumers and love and passion for developing, building their brands and products.

However, the speakers affirmed, a “hands-on” can still be successful in the profession if there is a spirit of eagerness to learn and make more efforts than someone who comes from the marketing industry. “People already have the foundation, but I don’t. So I have to start building, in the process of doing, I have to learn, the system can continuously keep up,” added Mr. Lam.

Thus, a young marketer who wants to advance in the profession needs to have business thinking, creativity, analytical ability and a spirit of curiosity. Ms. Thuc added that marketing can change user behavior, so professional ethics is also very important.

“It’s easy for marketers to fall into “evil” paths in the industry. Please only market products and services that are useful to people, serve the development of society and are good for people. , she added.

To get these factors, young people need to prepare right from the time they are still in the classroom. Students can gain experience through internships, part-time jobs, group activities or join marketing groups to observe and learn from their predecessors.

At the same time, higher education institutions can also cooperate with businesses to equip students with new knowledge and perspectives, close to reality. According to Mr. Lam, businesses are always ready to accompany universities because this is also a way to find potential employees.
