Nuclear deal with Iran was ‘very close’

Comments by the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, Mr. Josep Borrell, made yesterday at the Doha Forum. According to Mr. Borrell, in recent days, there are many moves to promote “revival”. Iran nuclear deal.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on March 24 that the vital issue related to the lifting of sanctions on Iran has not been completely resolved. According to him, “if the US is determined, the nuclear deal will be signed quickly.” However, US officials remain cautious when assessing the progress of the negotiations.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 group (including the US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany). The deal was on the verge of collapse after the US withdrew from the agreement in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran. This caused Iran to renegotiate some of its commitments in the agreement and advance its previously halted nuclear programs. Since April 2021, the parties have conducted eight rounds of negotiations in Vienna to save the agreement.
