Reuters and RT news agency reported from the Russian Defense Ministry on March 26 that the Azerbaijani army violated the ceasefire in November 2020 in Nagorno-Karabakh. The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but the population is predominantly Armenian minority.

“In the past two days, the Azerbaijani army entered the area of ​​responsibility of the Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh territory and set up an observation post. Four airstrikes were carried out by Bayraktar drones. TB-2 was conducted against the armed forces of Nagorno-Karabakh, near the settlement of Furukh,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russia has called on Azerbaijan to withdraw its troops and make efforts to return troops to their original positions. However, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan has denied the accusations by Russia and described the information released by Moscow as one-sided. signed with Armenia and Russia in November 2020 to end the conflict in this region.

Backed by Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh separated from Azerbaijan after a war in the 1990s and has existed as a self-proclaimed, unrecognized entity ever since. Fighting often broke out here, but the conflict later ended with Azerbaijan’s victory when it regained control of more than half of the territory it lost in a previous war, around 1991-1994.

However, many issues remain unresolved, including the legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh and the Armenians living there. Moscow deployed nearly 2,000 peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh following the truce.
