The Taliban forbid women from flying without male escorts

The Taliban is demanding that Afghan airlines prevent women from boarding domestic or international flights if they are not accompanied by men.

The move came after the Taliban broke their previous promise to open secondary schools for girls, a change that shocked many Afghans and was criticized by humanitarian agencies and foreign governments.

The United States on March 25 canceled a planned meeting with several Taliban officials on important economic issues as a result of the decision.

The unnamed source said the Taliban government’s Ministry of Ethics and Crime Prevention sent a notification to airlines about the new restrictions yesterday. Women who are not accompanied by men who have booked tickets are still allowed to board today and tomorrow. However, several women with tickets were still turned away at Kabul airport on March 26.

The Taliban claimed they had changed from their previous rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. At that time, they banned women from going to school, work or leaving home without a male relative accompanying them. . The Taliban also insists they provide for women’s rights under Islamic law and Afghan culture.

However, the closure of secondary schools and some of the restrictions the Taliban have imposed on working women or requiring women to be accompanied when traveling long distances have drawn criticism from human rights groups.

It is not clear whether the Taliban have exceptions to regulations that restrict women from traveling by plane, for example in an emergency, or for women without male relatives living in the country.
