Tiktok is a social network used by many people, especially young people. According to incomplete statistics, although it appeared not long ago in Vietnam, so far there are more than 13 million users of this social network. The most popular age for using Tiktok in our country is 13 to 24 years, but in reality, the number of children under 13 who use this social network is quite a lot.

TS.BS Tran Thi Hong Thu – Deputy Director of the Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital said although Tiktok addiction has not been classified as a mental illness, during the examination, doctors received a lot of schooling. School-age children are brought in by their families because they are “too addicted” to Tiktok.

Dr. Thu said that Tiktok addiction is like game addiction, Facebook addiction – i.e. users are attracted to cyberspace, which limits other skills… For example, adults neglect work, stop eating, etc. stop sleeping to go online, while students experience decreased learning power, inability to concentrate, decreased attention…

“One of the problems with young people suffering from internet addiction in general and TikTok in particular is the cognitive effects, which can have long-term consequences in the future. Children with this condition have a general characteristic of being lethargic,” said Dr Hong Thu.

Recently, Dr. Hong Thu consults a new girl in grade 1, in Hanoi. According to the family story, from using the phone to study online, the girl started watching Tiktok often and asked her parents to shoot short videos to post online.

Children often imitate famous clips, especially songs that are easy to memorize, the lyrics of which attract the attention of many people, and some of the movements that accompany them.

According to the girl’s mother to the doctor, at first, seeing that she imitated the same breed, many people watched, the family was also very interested, thinking that she was talented, so let her have fun. Unexpectedly, this makes children increasingly addicted to social networks, neglecting their studies and recording their own videos without asking their parents for help.

“Seeing my child take videos of themselves with meaningless content, imitating outrageous dance moves, forgetting the main thing is studying, and then when reminded to lock themselves in their room to record their own videos… I was so worried that I rushed to the hospital for a checkup,” the girl’s mother shared.

In this case, Dr. Hong Thu especially shares and advises parents, because the baby is too small to listen to the doctor’s advice and cooperate in treatment. “In this case, parental assistance is very important, it takes longer, does not spoil, does not neglect children with electronic devices,” said Dr Hong Thu.

According to the doctor’s instructions, at first, parents should not suddenly ban their children, but need to get access to the internet as a gift. For example, if you study well, get good grades, finish lessons well … then you will be able to play for a certain time.

After “pulling” your child from regular online play, a complete cessation route will gradually be adopted instead of a permanent reward. “Essentially, it’s like quitting a game addiction, you have to slowly reduce your playing time, then stop it completely. Because if you are not firm, your child will easily become “addicted” and then quitting will be much more difficult”, advises Dr. Thu.

Finally, so that children are not addicted to electronic devices and the internet, parents must build a healthy lifestyle for their children, with proper exposure to social networks. Because in modern society, total ban seems impossible, especially in the context of children having to use the internet to study online.
