One employee of the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA) team has completed training in the use of a flight suit, and two other personnel will begin training afterwards. Once used proficiently, paramedics can fly to the location in need of assistance in 90 seconds instead of taking 30 minutes to walk. This is the first time in the world that a flight suit is used in an ambulance.
The flight suit, manufactured by Gravity Industries, began testing in September 2020 but had to be halted due to Covid-19 and difficulties in finding sponsors. The jet suit includes two mini-engines in each arm and one on the back that allows the pilot to control the movement manually. The suit can generate 144 kg of thrust, so it is easy to take off, saving travel time by flying close to the ground.
Andy Mawson, GNAA’s chief operating officer, completed the training. Currently, GNAA helicopters take 25 to 30 minutes to reach patients in the Lake District area, once staff find a flat area to land. The GNAA works closely with the mountain rescue team and says a big advantage of the flight suit is its ability to operate in low visibility and strong winds, which make it difficult for helicopters.
The flight suit works effectively with strong winds of 56 km/h, according to GNAA data, can be used in 15-20 emergency cases a week. Ambulance personnel need to fly with a 10-15 kg kit, which includes a defibrillator and patient monitoring devices worn on the pilot’s legs and chest.
“This is a body-worn machine, you have to find a balance. We have a lot of pressure to use the flight suit, but the real purpose is to get to patients who need urgent medical care,” Mawson said. To share.
