COVID-19 slows down circular economy development in Vietnam

At the Annual Member Conference of the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance, which brings together 19 large enterprises, businesses have determined that 2022 must be the year to focus on accelerating so as not to change the recycling goals set.

After nearly 3 years of establishment, the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance with 19 members who are large enterprises has built a collection system with more than 2,000 partner units.

In the past 6 months, businesses in the Alliance have collected more than 1,200 tons of packaging waste. Positive results, but still not as expected, due to the impact of the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has caused us to delay many plans, making the amount of packaging waste collected lower than we expected. However, we still achieved encouraging results as we continued to build. network of collection and enforcement partners in four groups: residential areas, schools, shopping malls and the government of some major cities,” said Laurent Levan, President and General Director of URC Vietnam. know.

During the economic recovery, the Alliance aims to collect and recycle about 10,000 tons of plastic materials alone this year, 2-3 times higher than currently collected.

The new Law on Environmental Protection also took effect from the beginning of this year, along with a detailed Decree already in place, under which EPR models, extended responsibility of manufacturers in recycling have changed from voluntary to compulsory. . The participation of large manufacturing enterprises at the vanguard will play an important role.

“We are actively participating together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to develop a plan to effectively implement the EPR regulation – expanding producer responsibilities, because we think this is the right thing to do right away. Nam is also a case for other countries like Thailand to consult on EPR construction,” said Leonardo Garcia, General Director of Coca-Cola Vietnam.

“Most importantly is the learning and perception change we have gained during this experiment. According to experts, circular economy It is a long-term battle that cannot result in overnight results, requiring efforts from all sides to succeed. Experience in European countries, although several decades ahead, but currently the rate of reused packaging is only 60-80%.
