Le Quang Liem won the 7th runner-up at Rapid Chess Championship 2022

After placing 6th in the Swiss round, Quang Liem had to hold black in all three quick games of the knockout round, a disadvantage for the number 1 player in Vietnam.

Entering the quarter-final against Bok (Netherlands), a less qualified opponent, Liem held the 10+2 game and then won the next 3+2 game and was held white to enter the next round.

In the semi-final against Paravyan (Russia), Liem immediately won in game 10+2 even though he had to hold black (lower ranking in the Swiss round).

On the way to the final, Liem avoided the Caruana branch (USA), who won the Swiss round and is leading the tournament after 6 weeks. However, Caru did not reach the final when he lost 0.5-1.5 to Andreikin (Russia) in the remaining semi-final.

Liem meets Andreikin in the final. Game 10+2 Liem drew the opponent. However, in the next game 3+2, Liem holding white could not win like in the quarterfinals. He entered the ruin of the rook and gave up after changing the rook to a good one but was unable to stop the remaining pawn from leveling up.

With the runner-up of the week, Liem has $ 3500 in prize money and 7 GP points. Liem has only participated in 3/7 times and has had two prizes in the top 8, of which the highest is this runner-up. Liem currently has 12 GP points, is in the current top 12, qualifying for the final round of the tournament.

GP points are calculated as the result of 13/25 highest weekly tournaments, so Liem has only attended 3/7 weekly tournaments but is not afraid of losing to his opponent in the final rankings. Among the new players participating in 3 tournaments, only Do Bom (15 points) has a higher GP score than Liem.

RCC holds 25 consecutive qualifying tournaments every weekend, followed by the final round with 16 players on August 25-28.
