New quantum battery charging technology will help electric cars charge as fast as gas

Current civilization can hardly live up to the definition of “civilization” when it is still dependent on burning fuel. Whether the next step is in photovoltaics, fusion or any other way of producing clean energy, the inevitable trend is still a renewable energy that does not hurt the environment and the climate.

That is why many research centers are frantically looking for a new source of energy to meet the growing needs of mankind. Electricity is being honored as the energy of the new era, and researchers are constantly looking for the most efficient electric product for a green, clean and beautiful future.

Perhaps the most visual change comes from the auto industry. Electric vehicles were still a minority about 10 years ago, but today the number of electric vehicles produced annually has reached millions. The electric car market has a record high growth rate, making Elon Musk one of the richest people in the world, and is attractive enough to make billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong invest in the future of electric vehicles.

Unlike traditional cars that use an internal combustion engine with liquid fuel, electric cars run on electrical energy stored in batteries. The energy per unit volume of the battery is not comparable to that of the fuel, which is why electric vehicles cannot be popular with low mileage.

But when battery technology is more and more modern, now to an acceptable level, electric cars are gradually replacing petrol and diesel cars. Thanks to the effort to perfect the battery, successfully increase the capacity and safety of a large energy storage system, the new electric vehicle has been able to develop so explosively.

A new problem arises during use: the slow charging speed causes some disadvantages, and at the same time makes people who have not tried electric vehicles afraid of changes. Currently, a typical electric vehicle will need about 10 hours to fully charge. Even stations that offer fast charging services require the vehicle to be idle for 20-40 minutes.

To solve this problem, scientists are looking for answers in a still-mysterious field: quantum physics. The search led the team of experts to a new charging principle that would improve the charging speed of existing batteries.

According to a report on the concept of “quantum batteries” published in 2012, scientists theorize that quantum resources, such as the concept of “quantum entanglement”, can speed up battery charger when it can be used to charge all the energy storage blocks at once.

Promising technology attracts many eyes from the energy industry. Being able to charge multiple battery cells at the same time will significantly improve charging speed. This technology is difficult to apply to classical batteries, with electricity being charged individually for each energy storage block. There is a scale called “advantages of quantum charging” to describe the difference in charging speed between the two methods, which is to charge all cells at the same time and to charge each energy block in parallel.

In 2017, researchers pointed to two factors that could create a quantum charging advantage. One is “global operation, when power cells can communicate with each other at the same time; the second is for the cells to interact in pairs.

Before the new research report was published in Physical Review Letters, scientists had not yet determined exactly what elements were needed for the new quantum charging technology, nor had they determined the upper limit of the charging speed.

New research results confirm that quantum batteries do not need paired cells, but will benefit from the energy blocks being able to communicate with each other at the same time. The team at the same time showed how fast the new technology can charge.

The Institute of Basic Science illustrates an electric vehicle using a regular battery compared to an electric vehicle with a battery using a quantum charging mechanism. Increasing the charging speed up to 200 times will significantly reduce the waiting time at the charging station.

Assume that a typical electric vehicle uses a battery containing about 200 energy cells. The application of new quantum charging technology will help the battery to charge up to 200 times faster, which means that the 10-hour charging time will be shortened to 3 minutes. At fast charging stations, the time will be cut from 30 minutes to a few seconds.

The scientists also believe that the results of the research will also find applications beyond batteries in electronics. It could find its way into a fusion energy production system, which requires the ability to charge/discharge huge amounts of energy in a short time.

Most research on quantum mechanics is still in its infancy, its application still in the distant future. However, finding application directions early on will help businesses and organizations find the right investment and quickly lead civilization in the right direction. Investments in clean energy will pay off in the future, even if it’s just batteries put into electric vehicles.
