Russia seizes Swiss luxury watches

According to NZZ am Sonntag, Russian authorities have seized Audemars Piguet watches worth millions of dollars.

Audemars Piguet watch numbers were seized at the company’s facilities in Moscow, NZZ am Sonntag (Switzerland) newspaper quoted a source close to the Swiss Foreign Ministry as saying. The newspaper said that this could be Russia’s response to Switzerland’s ban on the export of luxury goods to the country.

Russian authorities said the number of watches on the violation of customs regulations. In the opposite direction, the Swiss Foreign Ministry assessed this move “most likely as a response to sanctions”.

Switzerland – home to many of the world’s top watch brands – has abandoned its traditional neutral stance. The country is currently subject to European Union sanctions that ban luxury exports to Russia.

Brand leaders Audemars Piguet has not yet commented on this information. The Swiss watchmaker has now stopped exporting products to Russia and suspended retail operations in this market. A Swiss foreign ministry spokesman said the Swiss embassy in Moscow was assisting Swiss companies in dealing with Russian sanctions.

For many leading European companies, a complete withdrawal from the Russian market is also a challenge. Consumer goods companies, including giant Nestle, are at risk of asset confiscation if they leave the country.
