What’s so good about the word “scat” that young people use widely?

I don’t know since when did young people use the word “scat” to express their feelings. Just can’t find the words to describe it, so I say “Dump” like this, “Dump” like that. The word “spray” with different tones and attitudes will create different meanings. “Spit” to express surprise, appreciation; “squash” also shows sadness, disbelief, …

VOV2 Radio once invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Thi – Deputy Director of the Center for Foreign Languages and Culture of Vietnam to explain to parents and elders what the young people’s word “squash” means. Even writer Nguyen Nhat Anh once “favorably” put the phrase “scattered soul” into the work Little Dog Carrying a Basket of Roses. So what’s so good about the word “scat” that has become so popular and can replace so many other phrases?

What's so good about this word that young people use widely? - Knowing the origin, everyone is startled: From now on, please spare, do not use anymore! - Photo 1.

The word “spray” is commonly used by young people today (Artwork)

In terms of origin and semantics, “spray” does not mean evil, dark. In the book Dai Nam Quoc Am Tu Vi Huynh Tinh Cua’s lecture, “Scatter”: Women at the temple, practicing Buddhism are called “Straa monks”, “Straa mothers”.

In Vietnamese Dictionary of Tien Duc Khai Tri Association added 2 more meanings, including:

1.Falled out. Example: Eating rice spilled on the table.

2. Throw the swing out. Example: Scatter seeds, scatter corn kernels.

Thus, “spray” is also a healthy word like any other word. But why is “spray” so commonly used by young people? Before this problem, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Thi said that this is a word that is understood in a new sense created by young people to refer to excessive emotions. For example: So hot (so hot), so pretty (very pretty),…

In fact, young people are not strong enough to create the word “scat” with a completely different meaning from the original meaning. This word appeared from the years 2010 – 2015. At that time, young people were very fond of saying: Vai + x (x is a noun that creates a very vulgar way of speaking).

Gradually, this expression spread more widely. To reduce its obscenity, sensitivity, people cut off the x component behind, leaving the word “scat” rather obscure. Thus, “scattered” here is a cover-up word, with an impure origin. Many writers, artists, and researchers do not know, so they freely discuss and put this word into their works to integrate with the young. And who knows, when listening to other people say it, they will remember the structure: Dump + x reflexively.

Today, young people consider it normal to utter one word “squash”, two sentences “squash”. Those who do not understand the story will laugh and laugh, and those who understand the story will be embarrassed. Sadly, this uncultured and unethical way of speaking is becoming commonplace. The habit of abusing the word “scattered” makes the vocabulary of young people increasingly “poor”. When they don’t know what words to use, they put “scattered” in without thinking about it.

Looking back, we see decades ago, especially before the structure: Vai + x was born, the use of words was much more flexible and richer. When talking about the level of badness, one can list out a series of phrases: Too bad, too bad, bad, painful, ugly, ugly, etc. Or when it comes to beauty, some phrases will appear. Description: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ceiling, beautiful tilting water tilted, beautiful birds diving fish, …

Today, young people only know “so ugly” and “so beautiful”. Here, we are not saying that young people don’t know those phrases, but reflexively just use the word “scattered”.

In short, due to slyness, mischief and creativity, young people have turned the word “scattered” – which is harmless, into an uncivilized way of saying. Due to not fully understanding its meaning, many people agreed and spread it widely. This is a very dangerous job that needs to be removed to avoid impoverishing the Vietnamese language system as well as affecting the fine customs and traditions of Vietnam.
