Walking slowly step by step from the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital to the inn, the small figure, tired from illness and the austere face of Ms. Dong Wei Kim Loan caught everyone’s attention.
Ms. Loan is 39 years old this year, from Ninh Thuan, she went to Ho Chi Minh City to treat cancer. In July 2020, Ms. Loan was working at the time as a garment worker. During her lunch break, some colleagues discovered that her neck was abnormally large, so they advised her to go to the doctor.
Taking a day off from work, Ms. Loan went to the provincial hospital for examination but did not get sick. She asked to take another three days off, went to Cho Ray Hospital for examination, the doctor diagnosed her with cerebral ischemia, with lymph nodes in her neck. Listening to the doctor’s advice, Ms. Loan continued to visit the Oncology Hospital. Here, she collapsed when she read the conclusion that she had stage 1 thyroid cancer.
Ms. Loan, 39 years old this year, is undergoing cancer treatment at the Oncology Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City.
Loan shed tears when talking about her fate.
“The doctor said I must have surgery urgently, or else I will have metastases. I don’t have health insurance, if I buy it, I have to wait a month. So my family had to borrow everywhere, my parents and relatives helped me get another 100 million dong for my surgery. By now I have been tested again, it has metastasized, so I have to take radioactive drugs, each time 8 million VND. I’ve had 3 drinks already. And every 1.5 months, I have to go back for a check-up once.
Every time I finished taking radiation, I had to isolate from everyone for 24 days, so I rented an inn. After that, I will continue to isolate in my own room for another 14 days before going out“, Loan shared about her illness.
When she was healthy, she suddenly fell ill, and Ms. Loan also had to face an equally painful shock. It was her husband who left for another woman.

In 2016, Ms. Loan took out a loan of 90 million dong, just to take care of her husband going to school, becoming a doctor, with a little left over, she opened a nail salon to earn more. The couple plan to work hard and earn money to pay off their debt.
But when Loan just got sick. Knowing that his wife had to undergo surgery and owe hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, her husband did not care about the love, hurriedly left his shirt, leaving his wife, 2 small children and a large debt. Soon after, he remarried to another woman not far from his wife’s house. Ironically, the new wife is also a close friend with Ms. Loan. On the day of the divorce, he said he would provide for 2 children. But 2 years have passed, the amount of money he sent to Loan was only 1 million VND, when the child was sick. Ms. Loan did not bother to accept the money.
The figure of a small woman, tired of illness, made many people cry.
Do enough jobs to earn money, desire to be healthy
Until now, every month, Ms. Loan has to pay the bank debt of 5 million dong, including both principal and interest. To take care of this money, Ms. Loan’s father is old but still has to work, giving his daughter 2 million/month to pay the debt.
Loan, besides going to medical treatment, does enough jobs to make money, from doing nails to selling online, selling herself, shipping by herself, but it is not enough for both debt repayment and medical treatment. Feeling sorry for her situation, relatives who can afford to sometimes support her somewhat. Loan’s two children, the older one is in 5th grade, the younger one is in 4th grade, and is currently sending her 82-year-old great-grandmother (Loan’s paternal grandmother) to take care of her. Loving their mother, the two children are very good, every day they drive each other to school, tell each other to study, and help their mother with housework.
Ms. Loan wants nothing more than to have good health so that she can work and earn money to support her two school-age children.
Having health insurance, now, the amount of money to pay for each hospital visit of Ms. Loan is also greatly reduced. When going to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment, Ms. Loan rented a bed in a large motel to stay at a cost of 40,000 VND/day. Sometimes, the temples near the inn give rice, milk and fruit to charity, and Ms. Loan comes out to receive it, trying to minimize the cost of accommodation to have money for medical treatment.
When healthy people have many dreams. But when sick, everyone wants only one thing that is to have health. So does Ms. Loan. She just hopes that she recovers soon so that she can work to pay off her debt, raise two children to study and become a human.
