Canada’s waterways are being invaded by super-large schools of goldfish

Canada has a problem with goldfish.

From November 2021, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has shared a series of photos of super-large goldfish found in Hamilton Harbour. They say these goldfish are the result of stocking them in the country’s waterways, and this has created an invasive species that could wipe out other native fish species.

And now, Canada’s waterways are inundated with these super-large fish.

Goldfish are very intelligent and appear to be harmless fish, but they can wreak havoc on the natural world if left in the wrong place. While they can be quite small in aquariums, they can continue to grow larger throughout their lives if left in the wild. If conditions are right, they can develop into distinctive bloated creatures.

And that’s why Canada is having trouble with super-large goldfish. With access to an abundance of food, they have begun to take over key breeding sites for native fish such as the Northern Pike. Scientists fear they may even appear in Canada’s great lakes in the future if numbers are not reduced.

In a series of images shared on its Twitter, the Canadian Oceans and Fisheries Foundation shows just how large some of the goldfish have become. They are almost like soccer balls when placed in human hands.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada says its scientists are now using sound tags to track the movements of super-large goldfish. Specifically, they attached tiny sounding devices to the goldfish’s belly and then released it back into the water. From there, they can track where it will feed and spawn.

According to Euronews Reportedly, scientists have discovered more than 20,000 goldfish living in a rainwater pond outside of Ontario.

And as it turns out, these super-large goldfish are capable of surviving extreme conditions like low oxygen levels in the water. Temperatures in these ponds can also exceed 30 degrees Celsius. Scientists are concerned that climate change will reduce oxygen levels in the water even more. And this will allow goldfish to surpass native species for survival and survival.

In addition, goldfish can take up food in the environment quickly. Especially the super large goldfish are very voracious. This not only reduces the resources available to other fish species.

Not stopping there, goldfish also have a habit of stirring up the sediment layers to make the water cloudy. Turbid water makes it difficult for sunlight to reach the vegetation living on the bottom of the pond, affecting the food supply of the whole organism chain.
