At the time of admission, the patient’s condition was quite severe. Due to anemia and severe coagulopathy, children often have to use blood products and supportive drugs. To save the child’s life, a liver transplant is the only method. This is the 25th successful liver transplant at the National Children’s Hospital and the liver transplant performed entirely by the doctors and nurses of the National Children’s Hospital.

Doctors said that congenital biliary atresia is a rare disease of the liver and biliary tract. The incidence is about 1 in 10,000 live births. This is a disease that causes the entire biliary system inside and outside the liver to be damaged, resulting in biliary cirrhosis with severe consequences. Despite having a biliary-enteric anastomosis (Kasai surgery), some children with congenital biliary atresia still have advanced biliary cirrhosis and require a liver transplant for treatment.

Prof. Dr. Pham Duy Hien – Deputy Director of the National Children’s Hospital, who directly performed and directed the technique of the pediatric liver transplant, shared: “This liver transplant was performed in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic. -19 complex with a lot of difficulties. The liver transplant was prepared with the cooperation of many experts in the departments of Hepatology, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Outpatient Resuscitation, Center for Subclinical Testing, Blood Bank, Diagnostic Imaging… Day 14 On March 3, the major surgery was carried out, after 9 hours of stress, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Duy Hien and the team of surgeons of the National Children’s Hospital successfully transplanted the baby’s liver. The patient was revived thanks to the determination of doctors and the love of his family, especially his father, who donated part of his liver to save his son’s life.

After surgery, the patient is currently receiving post-transplant care at the Department of Surgical Intensive Care, National Children’s Hospital. Sharing about the process of caring for the pediatric patient, Dr. BS Dang Anh Duong, Head of the Department of Intensive Care Surgery, said that the patient received postoperative care with a special resuscitation regime in a sterile room. Doctors put the patient on a ventilator for 24 hours, providing maximum oxygen support, maintaining blood pressure, infusing blood products to correct blood clotting, taking drugs that inhibit transplant rejection… Children’s health Post-transplantation progressed well, graft function gradually stabilized.
