Fruit dumped in the market: Banana pepper 5,000 VND, dragon fruit 4,000 VND/kg piled up on the sidewalk

“Rescuing dragon fruit costs 90,000 1 box of 20kg”, “supporting watermelon consumption for 5,000 VND/kg”… are the ads that every day on the way home from work, Ms. Phung Thi Tho in Tam Mai (Hoang Hoang) Mai, Hanoi) also heard.

From the time before Tet until now, the points to rescue dragon fruit, support watermelon consumption are always full of goods. As a result, every few days, Ms. Tho visits these places to buy a box of fruit or 2-3 watermelons.

Cheap fruit like cho

The export to China dropped sharply, causing a series of fruit products to sell at market prices as cheap as giving.

In Hanoi these days, it is not difficult for passersby to come across stores selling rescue and consumption-supporting fruit. dragon fruit, watermelon… are piled up on the sidewalk and sold for 4,000-6,000 VND/kg. Even on the sidewalks of some streets, container trucks sell dragon fruit for 90,000 VND/box of 20kg (about 4,000 VND/kg), watermelon for 5,000-8,000 VND/kg, acacia mango for 99,000 VND/box of 13kg (about 7,600 VND/kg).

On the online market, there are not only dragon fruits and watermelons, but also the list of cheap fruits that continue to expand. For example, Muong Khuong honey pineapple reduced to 4,900 VND/small fruit, large ones cost 7,900 VND/fruit; The price of mangoes with thin seeds ranges from 10,000-15,000 VND.

Even quartet mangoes, sand mangoes with a high price, from 45,000-80,000 VND/kg depending on the time, many places now sell goods at 20,000-25,000 VND/kg.

Worth mentioning, export pink pepper bananas are offered for sale on the market for only 5,000-6,000 VND/kg. There are even places for sale for only 3,000 VND/kg, cheaper than a cup of iced tea on the sidewalk in Hanoi. According to shippers, this is an unprecedented low price.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh – the focal point of sale of pink pepper bananas in Hanoi – said that if the export goods to China are not blocked, this export pink pepper banana can be sold for up to 35,000-45,000 VND/kg on the market. and only sold in supermarkets.

But at this time, banana cars exported to China are turning back to sell in the domestic market. Do not sell quickly ripe bananas will rot. Accordingly, shop owners like her had to discharge their goods to sell cheaply.

Pink pepper bananas for export are being sold on the online market for only a few thousand VND/kg.

“I discharge a whole container of pink pepper bananas of grade 1. This type is selected for each batch for export and now retails in boxes,” she said.

On the first day, the selling price of Oanh was 80,000 VND/box of 10kg (about 4-5 bags), 135,000 VND/2 cartons. To this day, when the bananas are ripe, she has to sell them out at the price of 35,000 VND/barrel, ie only 3,500 VND/kg to salvage capital.

The more farmers plant, the heavier the hole is

In the watermelon capitals in Gia Lai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh,… the price of this fruit dropped to the bottom, only over 2,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Phan Van Lam rented land to grow melons in Ea Cha Rang (Son Hoa, Phu Yen), said that traders only buy melon type 1 weighing 4 kg/fruit or more for 2,200 VND; Type 2 from 3 kg/fruit, price 2,000 VND. So for nearly 3 months of planting and caring, at the end of the crop, he and his wife had to sell out, estimated a loss of nearly 20 million dong.

“Looking at the pile of melons drying in the sun, I moved to a cool place and piled them up, the round melon rolled to the ground, my wife cried,” said Lam sadly.

In Vinh Thanh (Binh Dinh), in the season of ripe watermelon, Mr. Ngo Van Thuan also reaped all the sadness because of the lack of watermelon, the price dropped sharply.

The farmer sheds tears on the day of watermelon harvest.

According to Mr. Thuan’s calculations, a pole of watermelon (500m2), land rent, seed money, fertilizer, care until harvest day costs about 7-7.5 million VND. However, in this case, he only earned about 3.8 million VND / sao when cutting and selling the fruit.

“I planted 30 sao, after harvesting, if I sell all of them, I will lose hundreds of millions of dong. If there are households with larger areas, the losses will be heavier,” he said sadly.

In the dragon fruit capital of Binh Thuan, after the price of dragon fruit dropped to a low price and lasted for several months, farmers were almost exhausted. Some households grit their teeth and cut down this type of crop because the more holes they plant, the heavier they are.

Gardeners in Binh Thuan said that dragon fruit was originally a tree to get rich, there were times when China “eats” for 50,000-60,000 VND/kg, they profit 170-180 million VND/ha after subtracting full cost. At this time, the price of dragon fruit is up to 10,000 VND/kg, but the price is cheap because it cannot be sold.

Sharing about the story of agricultural product congestion and the chorus of falling prices, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that 3-4 years ago, there was also congestion at the border gate but not as severe as now. .

Every time the questions: why depend on a large, undiverse market, do not develop a market of 100 million people, do not increase the processing of goods, but export raw materials, do not standardize quality, and export mainly. quota, investment and development of logistics?… are set again.

“But we suffer from ‘forgetfulness’, because when the goods are released, those questions drift away without persistently finding solutions to deal with the fault,” the minister said. Not to mention, we also have the disease of self-satisfaction, satisfied with what we have, so we are afraid to change. Economic methods are still “blind” in terms of supply and demand, do not go into orbit, sometimes it is more like trading trips rather than methodical cooperation, so there are many risks.

Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that fruit and vegetable exports in February 2022 continued to decrease by 14.3% over the same period last year. Generally, in the first two months of 2022, the export turnover of this group of products only reached 508.7 million USD, down 9.6% compared to 2021.

It is worth mentioning that exporting vegetables and fruits to the largest market, China in the first two months of the year only earned 261.2 million USD, down 25.8% compared to the same period in 2021. The main reason was implemented by China. The “zero Covid” policy caused agricultural vehicles to be stuck at the northern border gates. Along with that, from January 1, 2022, the export of agricultural products to China must comply with Order 248 and Order 249 on food safety management and supervision of the General Administration of Customs of China.
