Kremlin: Russia only uses nuclear weapons if threatened

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the above statement in an interview on PBS TV channel regarding Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov said that Russia will only use nuclear weapons in the event of a “threat to the very existence” of the country.

Mr. Peskov emphasized, in the case of Russia using nuclear weapons, the cause is not due to conflict with Ukraine now. The Kremlin spokesman confirmed that Russia’s military operation in Ukraine did not target houses or civilian facilities.

The Kremlin spokesman said: “Whatever the outcome of the operation in Ukraine is not a reason to use nuclear weapons. Our concept of security is very clear to any one country. Only only when there is a threat to the very existence of the country can we actually use nuclear weapons to eliminate that threat.Please separate the two issues: the survival of the country. Russia and the special military operation in Ukraine. These two issues are not related!”.

According to Russian military doctrine, Russia “will have the right to use nuclear weapons in response to the use of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction against Russia or its allies, as well as against acts of aggression against Russia using conventional weapons where the very existence of the state is threatened”.

In February 2022, President Putin told the press that, if Ukraine joined NATO, this would push Russia to use nuclear weapons.

“There will be no winners if Ukraine tries to retake Crimea,” the Russian leader said.
