‘Money is a sufficient condition for technological autonomy’

BILLIONOwnership is always a difficult problem not only in Vietnam but also in many countries around the world. So Where is Vietnam on the journey of technological autonomy?

Mr. Cao Van Viet: According to my understanding, with the software technology segment, Vietnam can achieve the highest autonomy. Over the years, many Make in Vietnam technology products have been born, and also started to have a good name in the region and in the world. New and difficult technologies such as blockchain or AI have also been approached quickly, promptly and effectively. These include Coin98, Axie Infinity in the blockchain field, and NFT.

But technology is not just software. It also has hardware technology, mechanics, electronics, chemistry, biology… With the hardware, mechanical, and electronic sectors, I think Vietnam has not yet achieved a high degree of autonomy. We still have to import a lot of equipment and hardware from abroad. I hope that the state will pay more attention, invest more, and also have more talents to contribute achievements to other technology fields.

Mr. Tran Viet Hai: In Bkav, we see that Vietnam is having a natural time, favorable terrain, and harmony. We have a great opportunity to become a technology powerhouse. Historically, Japan in the 1940s, Korea in the 1960s, all had the same starting point as we are now. Vietnamese people, in terms of mathematical thinking, can be top in the world. In addition, the characteristics of the nation are perseverance, endurance, flexibility. Those are characteristics suitable for scientific research and technological work. Therefore, our qualities are very suitable.

In the hardware segment, we actually started in 2003. At that time, it was extremely difficult to make a hardware device in Vietnam. Design is already a problem, but when we outsource production, it is also difficult, because Vietnam specializes in mechanical processing, so to make electronic equipment needs a lot of foreign countries.

However, from 2014-2015 onwards, with the shift of large FDI enterprises, Vietnam became a production center. Now we can be confident that the production process of electronic equipment is 100% domestic. From design, printed circuit, mechanical fabrication, complete assembly, can be done entirely in the country.

Our self-control has reached a new level. The electronics industry has made progress, but to be fully autonomous, to lead, we need more resources. We have smartphones, cameras, a background in hardware technology, an ecosystem of factories, and supply partners… enough to compete with foreign competitors. We are also now working to promote that ecosystem for other Vietnamese companies, by pooling resources, to promote technology mastery on a broader scale.
