This is part of Russia’s response to international sanctions imposed on the country because attack Ukraine.

RT news agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying to members of the ruling United Russia party on March 28 that the President’s decree on “retaliatory measures on visas related to actions not friendly of some foreign countries” is being drafted. “The act will introduce a series of restrictions on entry into Russian territory.”

Meanwhile, the entry and stay procedures in Russia for stateless people and those entering the territory of Ukraine have been simplified. This is done to prevent the threat to the lives and health of these people, so that they can return safely to their homeland, Foreign Minister Lavrov explained.

Last week, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called for a halt to visas for Russian citizens as part of new sanctions against Moscow. The leader explained that this is necessary for the Russians to be aware of what is happening in Ukraine.

Previously, Belgium also made a similar proposal. Japan has also stopped issuing certain types of visas to Russians while Lithuania, Latvia, Norway and the Czech Republic have stopped issuing visas to all Russians. Prague and Oslo also stopped accepting residence permits.

Russia’s list of unfriendly countries initially included only the United States and the Czech Republic, but was expanded in March after the West imposed unprecedented sanctions on Moscow. Currently, this list includes all member states of the European Union (EU), Ukraine, Great Britain, Canada, Japan and many others.

All of the above countries are subject to Russia’s specific retaliatory measures, restrictions and requirements. Recently, Russian President Putin ordered all unfriendly countries to pay for Russian gas in rubles. However, the G7 rejected this request.

The Russian Ministry of Finance also has another counter-initiative that requires Russian companies that want to work with partners from countries on the list of unfriendly countries to get permission from the government.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 and now the war has entered its second month. Russia demands that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country and never join NATO.
