UAE plays play-off with Australia
Having won 1-0 against South Korea in the final match of the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup, the UAE ranked third in Group A and won the right to the play-off round.

Before the last match of Group A, UAE (9 points) and Iraq (8 points) compete for the third place in Group A. While the UAE hosts South Korea, Iraq is a guest on the Syrian field. Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s teachers and students made good use of their right to self-determination, when they beat Korea 1-0 thanks to Harib Abdalla’s only goal in the 54th minute.

The somewhat unlucky match of South Korea, when they had 77% possession, hit the bar twice and enjoyed all 16 corners in the game. In the last minutes, Son Heung-min took a dangerous free kick, but goalkeeper Khalid Elsa saved the UAE.
Son Heung-min and his teammates lost the only match in the qualifying round, thereby losing the top position of Group A to Iran – the team that won Lebanon 2-0 in the last round. However, the representative of East Asia is still the 10th time in a row to participate in the World Cup.
UAE, with 12 points, ranked third with three points more than Iraq – the team only drew 1-1 against Syria. The UAE will play a play-off with the third team of Group B – Australia on June 7. The winner of this match will play one more play-off match with the fifth-placed team in South America, to compete for a place in the 2022 World Cup.
Asia has identified four teams directly into the final round, namely Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Four South American teams entered the World Cup straight: Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay. The fifth place is a competition between Peru, Colombia and Chile.
