Young people spend a lot of money to buy sleep

ChinaDinh Nhat often lost sleep. Although she was tired, she could not sleep, from night to dawn.

“My body feels like it’s being controlled by some force,” the 30-year-old said.

Previously, Dinh Nhat thought that the cause of insomnia was due to the time difference, but later discovered that was not the only reason. In the dark of night, her hand kept scanning the phone screen in hopes of quickly sinking in sleep.

Then, she read an article that said that the light emitted by the phone screen will affect sleep. “New generation electronic devices often use blue light, emit short wavelengths that are sensitive to melatonin (the hormone that causes sleepiness), significantly inhibit melatonin secretion and affect sleep quality,” the article said. newspaper. Depressed, she threw the phone on the end of the bed.

Staring at the ceiling, Dinh Nhat imagined that if the chandelier moved, he would be hypnotized like a TV series or watch. But sleep still did not come to her.

Touching the phone, the girl began to find others in the same situation to see that she was not alone. On the social network Douban, there is a group of young people like Dinh Nhat who are always active at night because of insomnia. They have different levels of sleep disorders, such as difficulty falling asleep, insomnia, poor sleep quality, and easy awakening.

“Members all use sleep aids. The cheap ones are a few dozen yuan, the expensive ones are several thousand or even tens of thousands of yuan. There is no member who doesn’t try,” Dinh Nhat said.

There are people who also use oriental medicine of unknown origin, acupressure, yoga… One member shared, she used to take sleeping pills. The person then feels light-headed and may fall asleep. But when she got up to go to the bathroom, she couldn’t walk straight, but had to stick to the wall.

“This makes me see insomnia It’s scary,” Dinh Nhat said.

Data from the China Sleep Research Association in 2021 shows that 300 million people in China are suffering from sleep disorders. According to the 2022 China Sleep Research report, 57.41% of respondents have insomnia from 1-7 days a month, 3% have chronic insomnia.

The group “Support Coalition on Sleep Disorders” with a majority of young members on the social network Douban used to have many articles referring to the causes of insomnia. It is mainly divided into physiological, psychological and environmental factors.

“For example, having poor results in important exams, failing college, breaking up with a lover, being unemployed… These worries make many young people unable to sleep, some even do not want to sleep.” , a founding member of the group shared.

Although annoying for many people, the pressure of insomnia has created an economic boom. In 5 years (2016-2020), the size of the market for sleep products and services in China has increased from 261 billion yuan to more than 378 billion yuan, a growth rate of more than 44%. This market is expected to maintain its growth trend in the future.

Survey data by iMedia Research in 2021 shows that when faced with sleep problems, 40% of consumers in this country will choose to buy support products. The popularity of the products is relatively high. Meanwhile, 58% of consumers believe that sleep aids are weak and difficult to solve sleep problems with complex causes.

Every night, Maggie puts on her headphones, sits on her bed, and begins to meditate. Previously, she had spent thousands of yuan to buy a gravity blanket that was advertised to help users get a deep sleep. She also purchased electric sleep aids, steam masks for the eyes as well as various sleeping aids both at home and abroad.

“I spent hundreds of thousands of yuan to have a good night’s sleep. This amount for a young person is not small,” Maggie said.

Maggie is just one of many members of the “Sleep Disorder Mutual Aid Coalition” group that spends money to buy themselves sleep. Some members of the group even treat insomnia with sound methods at the cost of 400-900 yuan.

In the discussion group, there was never a definitive answer to the self-healing methods of insomniacs. Only by constantly trying and experimenting can they find the way that works best for them.

Dinh Nhat wears headphones, goes to bed at 12 o’clock at night, wakes up at 4 o’clock in the morning. Even though she was very tired at eight o’clock, she still had to get out of bed to work. During the day to stay awake this girl can only drink coffee … For a long time, the vicious cycle repeats itself.

Dinh tried counting 10,000 sheep, drinking all kinds of red wine sold on the market, jogging at night… but the results were not as expected. After a long time of losing sleep, she found that the more she worried, the more tired she became, unable to get out.

After months of struggling, Dinh finally went to the hospital to see a doctor. “It’s the only way I can save myself right now,” she said.
