Auction for a white diamond the size of a chicken egg for $ 30 million

Christie’s Auction House was founded in 1766 and despite nearly three centuries of history, the organization has never encountered a white diamond as large as the “The Rock” below. The 228.31-carat stone, with an estimated value of $20-30 million, is undoubtedly the largest white diamond ever brought up for auction.

The stone “The Rock” is about the size of a chicken egg, pear-shaped, color G, purity VS1. This is the largest DZ range pear diamond available ever graded by the GIA laboratory.

The Rock was quarried about 20 years ago in South Africa but has only now been publicly sold. Rauhul Kadakia, Christie’s international director of jewelry, said: “There’s a lot of demand in the diamond market right now. 2021 will see a rebound in both the art and jewelry markets.”

The previous auction record for the largest white diamond was a 163.41 carat stone that sold for $33.7 million in Geneva in November 2017.

The Rock will be premiered at Christie’s Dubai from March 26 to 29 before moving to Taipei and New York. The diamond will then go on public display during Christie’s Luxury Week, which runs from May 6 to 11 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Geneva.

A few months ago, the De Beers Cullinan Blue, a 15.10 carat blue diamond, also sold at auction for $48 million.

Diamonds are increasingly being sold for incredible prices in auctions. Christie’s also auctioned the largest pink purple diamond Sakura for $25 million.
