Experts warn of unexpected causes many Vietnamese people get sick

Infertility rate is increasing

According to Dr. DS. Ta Thanh Son (Institute of Biopharmaceutical Technology, University of Marburg, Germany), World Health Organization estimates, there is one in four couples of childbearing age in developing countries. childless despite trying to get pregnant for 5 years.

One study analyzed infertility rates from 1990 to 2010 across countries, regions and globally using data from 277 health surveys. Research estimates that more than 45 million couples, or about 15% of all couples worldwide, were infertile in 2010.

Among women aged 20-44 years of age, 1.9% were unable to bear children (primary infertility). Among women who have given birth at least once and are of childbearing age, 10.5% are unable to have more children (secondary infertility). Infertility rates are highest in South Asia, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Meanwhile, an analysis published in the journal Human Reproduction Update found that sperm counts for men in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand are plummeting. Researchers noted a 52% decline in sperm concentration and 59% decrease in total sperm count over a nearly 40-year period ending in 2011. Another unrelated study suggested that men is involved in 30% and contributes up to 50% of all infertility cases.

Male infertility is also on the rise.

Drug abuse is the cause of infertility

Dr. DS. Ta Thanh Son said, there are many possible causes of infertility and one of the important factors is the abuse of western medicine. Most drugs on the market today have not been evaluated for their effects on male fertility prior to being licensed. There are many studies showing that certain drugs are particularly harmful to the male reproductive system, including testosterone, opioids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, immunomodulators, and even many drugs. no prescription.

A team of French and Danish researchers investigated the health effects when a mother-to-be took any one of three mild pain relievers found in the medicine cabinets of virtually all homes. are acetylsalicylic acid (common trade name aspirin), paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen and sold under the brand names Tylenol) and ibuprofen (common brand names Advil and Motrin).

The placental barrier is composed of many layers and functions as a membrane to separate maternal blood from the fetal blood stream. Substances from the mother’s blood can be transferred to the fetus by a variety of mechanisms, such as diffusion or active transport by membrane pumps.

Therefore, the fetus is also exposed to the drugs if the mother takes the drug during pregnancy. Their early experiments showed that when taken during pregnancy, aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen all affect the testes of male infants.

In addition, scientists from Copenhagen University Hospital studied the effects of paracetamol on laboratory mice and came to the conclusion that exposure to paracetamol within 13.5 days after mating can reduce fertility of the female embryo. According to the results, females have fewer egg cells as they mature. This reduces their chances of successful reproduction, especially as they age.

In another study, a team from the Institute for Research in Occupational and Environmental Health in France recruited 31 male volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35. Of these, 14 were given a 600 dose of ibuprofen. milligrams twice a day. This 1200 mg daily dose is the maximum recommended limit on the label of common ibuprofen products. The remaining 17 volunteers received a placebo.

Men who abuse over-the-counter pain relievers have difficulty conceiving.

For men taking ibuprofen, within 14 days, LH or luteinizing hormone – which is secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulates the testes to produce testosterone – will be affected by the level of ibuprofen circulating in their blood. . At the same time, the concentration ratio between testosterone and the hormone LH is reduced, which is a sign of testicular dysfunction.

Hormonal imbalances lead to impaired fertility, depression and an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke.

For a small group of young study participants who took only ibuprofen for a short time, these adverse effects went away after stopping the medication. However, it remains unclear whether the health effects of long-term use of ibuprofen have an effect.

In the past, some studies have shown that men with high levels of paracetamol in the urine will reduce sperm motility and delay having children. Research has recently been published in Human Reproduction to explain how Paracetamol affects sperm motility.

Sperm exposed to paracetamol can produce an N-arachidonoyl phenolamine (AM404) metabolite of paracetamol, which can alter calcium signaling and interfere with sperm’s ability to fertilize. In the above experiment, only three healthy young men participated in the human experiment (in vivo). Experiments were performed mainly in vitro, and semen samples were provided by young, healthy volunteer donors. More specific large-scale human studies are still needed to confirm the results of the study.

With the above evidence and scientific studies, patients need to be more cautious in using over-the-counter pain relievers, especially those who are trying to have children or have problems with late donation. If possible, short-term discontinuation of the drug can also help facilitate fertilization and avoid potential risks that the drugs can bring.“, Dr. DS. Thanh Son recommends.
