Notes for young people who want to pursue a career in marketing

According to experts, young people should self-assess their abilities, consult teachers and access mass information to have a good orientation for their chosen industry.

The demand for labor is increasing, the university training majors and the job positions in the marketing field are also increasingly diversified. In that context, many young people have difficulty choosing majors and jobs after graduation because they are afraid of missing out or not catching up with the market, their peers…

Accordingly, in episode 6 of the UniPrep chain with the theme “Marketing training – new context, new trends”, Mr. Tang Gia Hai Lam – Deputy General Director of YouNet Group, Ms. Luu Thanh Huyen – Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development ‘Oréal Vietnam and Ms. Le Huynh Phuong Thuc – General Director of Guardian Vietnam retail chain gave some advice on career orientation for young people.

According to Ms. Luu Thanh Huyen, there is no absolute right formula for everyone in choosing whether to go vertically or horizontally, i.e. major or narrow in marketing or any profession.

“Like consumers, marketers are complex and constantly changing, and only you know which way to go,” she says.

However, from a further perspective, to become a good marketer, the profession needs to have certain “blocks” of capacity and place each “brick” to fill that gap. Either way, workers must persevere to the end. Therefore, the female speaker advised young people not to be too confused when facing many turns.

So, to determine whether to go vertical or horizontal first, young people need to see what type of person they are, what are their strengths, suitable for small niches or can multitask, cover many jobs at the same time. “Before making a decision, you must really take the time to understand yourself first. This is quite lacking in young people today”, Ms. Thanh Huyen affirmed.

Usually, when thinking about something, people often start by looking for outside information instead of asking themselves how much time they spend to understand what they want, what they are good at… Therefore, If spending 10 hours to learn about outside information, young people also have to spend 8-10 hours to discover themselves and become more confident.

“Everybody has to reach the destination whether going vertically or horizontally. Look for the long way, not the short,” she emphasized.

After the step of self-understanding, young people need to continue to find the right answer for themselves through three sources of support, including: teachers, social networks – media and experts, the forerunners. According to Mr. Lam, the role of the teacher at the university gives systematic and fundamental knowledge. The experiences of so many generations before have been systematized into theory. However, updating such systematic theory takes a lot of time, so the role of the teacher is to help young people not get lost, instead of updating with new trends.

The environment that can help young people update new things is social networks, the media. This system can be interactive, one-way communication, a system of data, analysis… From there, learners can know what new knowledge is, what the world model is saying, read the lessons learned by the students. CEOs, CMOs from large corporations…. Thanks to that, you will understand more about new trends.

However, in order to know how to use that knowledge, when, and whether it can be applied in Vietnam, young people need support from professionals such as experts and experienced people to verify, exchange more.

In particular, Facebook groups are one of the useful channels to reach these audiences. Here, young people can also have a broader perspective through the multi-dimensional opinions of the community or can verify and ask for teachers’ opinions.

“I called this ‘filling the foundation’ for myself since I was in school. At that time, you will know what marketing is about in broad terms, what does it mean to go deep in each area. You will have your own sentences. own answer to the question: what should I do to choose a career,” said Vice President of YouNet Group.

On the other hand, the cooperation between schools and businesses will help students receive the latest updates on the market while the theoretical background from the lecturers. For example, Mr. Lam’s Buzzmetrics and Younet companies actively come to the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City to interact with students of the Marketing faculty with modules such as digital marketing or social listening.

“Businesses are also not afraid to cooperate with the school because this is also a way to train and prepare the future workforce for the company,” he affirmed.

Speaker Le Huynh Phuong Thuc advises young people to still learn basic knowledge and overview of the industry because the change of marketing solutions changes very quickly, even being replaced in about 6 months. Therefore, with a foundation, graduates can adapt to any “branch” of marketing.
