Completing assignments is a student’s obligation but also a headache for many parents. Right from elementary school, students have begun to get used to difficult exercises, even with questions beyond the ability to guess. This makes many parents want to “boost” and stroke when tutoring their children.

Recently, a parent in China posted a seemingly simple math exercise that caused controversy in the online community. The content of the question is as follows:

“Make math to calculate:

9 plus 9 divided by 3, how much?”.

Before the above topic, her son set the calculation as: 9+9 : 3 = 12. However, the calculation was considered wrong by the teacher, crossed out with the caption “Review carefully the lesson learned. “. The elementary school student suddenly thought of another calculation: (9+9) : 3 = 6, but the teacher still shook her head, saying it was not correct.

The problem caused the online community to explode into controversy.

Listening to her son’s narration, the mother was extremely bewildered. She checked the problem again, consulted many different solutions books but still couldn’t find another answer. At this point, the mother doubts whether her child is naughty in class, making the teacher angry and deliberately giving wrong marks.

Finally, the mother decided to go to the school to confront the teacher. The teacher was not angry, patiently explained to parents to understand. The teacher gently replied: “In Math, division and division with remainder are completely different. The curriculum is coming to division with remainder. So, before this topic, you have to make calculations: 9+(3: 9) = 9 + 1/3“.

Despite being explained by the teacher, the parents are still not satisfied and somewhat frustrated. She believes that for primary school students, teachers should not give tricky math problems, puzzles like that. These types of exercises are not conducive to learning. It’s best to ask questions and quizzes that are practical and helpful.

Before that, there was a controversial problem with the following content: “The classroom has 11 lights, if 4 lights are turned off, how many lights are left in the class?”. An elementary school student immediately put the calculation: 11 – 4 = 7 but was crossed out wrong. The teacher explained that when the lights were turned off, the lights did not come on, but the number of lights remained the same. So the correct answer is 11.

In addition to conflicting opinions, many parents expressed their agreement with this type of topic. They argue that the nature of the tricky questions will help test a child’s thinking ability. In addition, it has the effect of carefully forming habits, motivating students to think of many different solutions, thereby improving learning efficiency.

At the same time, in order to make dry math knowledge more attractive, teachers have created unique questions. This helps students not feel bored, maintain interest and high initiative.

Parents should adapt to the new way of setting up new topics in particular as well as education reform in general. Parents should not only focus on grades but also pay attention to the ability to cultivate knowledge and skills so that students can develop comprehensively.
