Ukraine says Russia increased artillery fire after promising to reduce fighting

Ukrainian officials say Russian forces shelled the city of Chernihiv overnight, despite previously announcing a significant reduction in military activity in the area.

“Air raid sirens are constantly ringing in the Donbass region, Kramatorsk, Bakhmut, the capital Kiev, Kiev province,” Denysenko said. “The city of Chernihiv and the Khmelnytsky province were shelled. In Kiev, several rockets were shot down.”

Denysenko said the situation in Chernihiv and Mariupol, two major cities besieged by Russian forces, was “very difficult”. Fighting is also believed to have occurred near the western suburbs of Irpin overnight, according to the adviser.

“Russian forces have not yet reduced their activity intensity in the direction of Kiev and Chernihiv,” Denysenko said. “Some units and equipment are moving to Belarus, but this is more like a reversal and consolidation of forces than a real cessation of the military operation.”

The Russian side has not commented on Ukraine’s allegations.
