14 years living at the airport

ChinaMr. Wei Jianguo, 60, has lived at the airport for the past 14 years, despite having a home in Beijing.

At the age of 40, Mr. Wei was fired by the factory because they thought he was too old. Desperate, depressed because he could not find a new job, he indulged in alcohol and cigarettes and was opposed by his family. After many quarrels with his wife, in 2008, Mr. Wei moved to the T2 terminal of Beijing International Airport, 19 km from home, to live. This decision was made after Wei watched the American movie The Terminal, is about a man who was stuck at an airport for years due to a problem with his identification.

The man spends most of his time eating, sleeping and using the government’s monthly allowance of 1,000 yuan (about 3.6 million VND) to maintain his life. He said he could comfortably drink alcohol and smoke without having to listen to his relatives’ complaints at his new place of residence.

Many times forced to leave by police and airport security, the man still managed to hold on. To sustain his life, he brought cooking utensils, blankets, and clothes in his suitcase.

“I don’t want to go home, there’s no freedom. They force me to quit drinking, quit smoking, or else I will have to pay a monthly allowance. That’s hard to accept,” Mr. Wei explained to China Daily newspaper 2018.

This man chose to settle down at T2 station “because it’s the warmest place” but still sometimes moves over to T3 for a short time to “change the atmosphere”. An airport salesman said that Wei is often loud and loud when drunk, but is harmless.

According to China Daily, Wei isn’t the only one living an airport-based lifestyle. In 2018, the authorities counted at least 6 people who chose Beijing airport as their home.

When he arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport (France), he lost all his identity documents as well as his property, so he could not enter or return.
