520 smuggled cars were crushed

South AfricaEastern Cape Police and the Road Traffic Management Association (RTMC) will destroy 520 illegally imported cars this week.

A representative of RTMC said that this number of vehicles has been traced since 2017 within the framework of a comprehensive series of investigations. The results of the investigation revealed an auto-smuggling organization linked to a number of government employees.

A total of 17 suspects, including police, officials of the Department of Transport and foreigners, were arrested in 2019. Foreigners are believed to be key elements of this organization.

The majority of illegally imported vehicles are from Japan and are banned from use in South Africa. Therefore, these vehicles seem to only transit here before re-exporting to the rest of Africa.

The case is still under investigation. The suspects are at risk of facing a variety of charges, including money laundering, corruption, violations of customs and tax laws, as well as national road traffic laws.

Of the 520 vehicles, 91 used fake license plates from neighboring countries, some with fake South African plates. All will be destroyed this week.
