Actor To Dung: ‘After the way to the flower land, I want to play controversial roles’

Actor To Dung said that the role of Nghia in The Way to the Flower Domain was a bit of a new challenge for him, when the character’s personality was different from the characters he had taken on.

Actor To Dung once shared, when reading the script The Way to the Flower Region, you were somewhat annoyed with the character of Nghia. What made you still accept the invitation to participate?

This is understandable because To Dung himself is an actor. In the past, I was often given the role of kind, gentle but “behind-the-scenes”. This time, the character Nghia has a slightly different personality, so I’m very excited. I want to try that change. With a new image, when I received the role of Nghia, I did not know how the audience would receive and react.

To Dung’s character Nghia was reacted by the audience because of his pride and pettiness.

After knowing the audience’s reaction, how does To Dung choose to behave?

When I started filming some scenes, I also guessed how the audience would react. Because in the way to the flower land, characters like Loi, Ms. Hoa, Uncle Lam, … are all very lovely. Only Nghia has a slightly annoying personality.

Although I expected that the audience would react differently, I was still a bit sad. Just a little bit (laughs). Then I thought back and thought I was doing well.

I made the audience have genuine feelings for the character, so that people can see that Nghia is sometimes hateful, sometimes lovable. The audience’s reaction to the character, even vehemently, is a success. I have nothing to be sad about and accept the opinions of the viewers in a normal way.

The actor said that when the film aired, he anticipated the audience’s reaction to the role of Nghia.

After such “rainy brother” roles, do you want to try your hand at a male lead role?

As an actor, perhaps everyone wants to play the main role, but playing the main or supporting role depends on many factors: for example, is the script suitable for me, luck has not come to me, I have really do well in the eyes of the director, the producer has not…

Wanting is one thing, but getting it is another.

What does To Dung think about the ending for the character Nghia in The Way to the Flower Domain?

Perhaps the audience can easily recognize that this is a film about the entrepreneurial journey of young people. Everyone has their own personality, everyone wants a happy ending.

Although Nghia has bad points, but it must be like that, until the last episodes, when the character’s psychology changes, people turn to better things, that’s the value that the film brings.

Nghia deserves good things, because her ideal is to bring what she has learned to dedicate to her homeland, and Nghia also wants her sister to be happy. Those are all good wishes.

The actor said that the characters in the movie deserve to be happy.

After a controversial, stoned role, does the latter intend to choose a safer character?

I want to play controversial roles like this. Everyone wants to be loved and praised by the audience. But when I do a lot of roles like that, I also find it boring and I am afraid that the audience will also be bored.

For example, in the past, I always played a good person, who was quietly behind the happiness of the female lead, then this time Nghia’s role was a little different. This helps the audience see a different side of themselves.

I’m just afraid that the audience won’t watch me anymore. If people are still watching, still angry, angry with the character, it means that they are watching the movie very carefully. Everyone wants to do a variety of roles. If I have the opportunity to accept such roles, I will definitely do and try to do better than Nghia. That is my dream.
