Doel – “ghost” town attracts tourists

The abandoned houses were fenced with iron at the windows and doors. The walls of the house were painted, painted in all sorts of ways against the rotting bricks and seemed likely to be blown away by the strong wind. A sense of backwardness, old-fashioned, quiet, haunts anyone who visits the village of Doel. However, this desolation is attracting many Belgians to come here to explore.

Sofie De Wachter – Belgian said: “It’s a magical place, no one lives here anymore so it makes an impression on me and I don’t know any other place like here, the drawings on the walls here. very beautiful”.

An operating nuclear power plant.

According to Mr. Steven, a resident of Doel, before 1965 Doel was a luxury town, then the villagers had to leave to make way for the Antwerp port expansion project. However, the plan was canceled because of the impact on the environment and this place is also located next to an operating nuclear power plant. It is expected that this power plant will also be relocated in the coming years.

“Life feels lonely to me, alone in the heart of a developed industrial area and I feel very free,” says Steven.

Still provided with electricity and water, but Mr. Steven and the villagers of Doel do not have utilities such as internet, supermarket, heating system in winter, so people look for interesting experiences. Although enjoying the quiet daily life to the point of solitude and isolation, the villagers of Doel are still willing to welcome tourists to come here to explore.
