Extension of registration time for delegations to SEA Games 31 due to lack of athletes

At the 2nd Conference of Heads of National Delegations attending the 31st SEA Games held in Hanoi on March 18, the host Vietnam Organizing Committee announced the deadline for Vietnam and the delegations to attend the 31st SEA Games. sport Attending the largest Sports Festival in the region in 2022, registration for membership is on March 31.

The 31st SEA Games Organizing Committee then received a preliminary list of 11 participating countries, including a total of 6,971 athletes (3,904 men, 3,067 women) participating in the competition, of which Brunei has 41 Athletes, Cambodia (494), Laos (363), Indonesia (1,001), Malaysia (815), Myanmar (754), Philippines (603), Thailand (1,036), Timor Leste (54), Singapore (706), Vietnam Men (1,104 athletes).

However, as of the afternoon of March 31, sports delegations only registered 7,300 members to attend the congress, of which there are about 3,600 athletes. Thai sports delegation has the largest number of registrations with 1,400 members.

The Indonesian delegation yesterday confirmed sending 476 athletes to participate in 31 sports at the 31st SEA Games. This number is down about 43% compared to the total number of athletes attending the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines (841 athletes). This means that they accept to lose about 30 gold medals compared to the 2019 Congress.

Mr. Zainudin Amali, Indonesia’s Minister of Sports, said that due to the epidemic situation, the national economic conditions were seriously affected. Therefore, in order to save costs, Indonesia must reduce the number of athletes participating. This also affects the team’s goal of winning a gold medal. However, they expect more gold medals from other potential sports.

Due to the short registration period, many countries proposed to ask for more time to continue adding athletes to the list. In other congresses, the registration period is longer, from 6 to 8 months in advance. But due to the epidemic and many other objective factors, the Vietnamese host opened registration on February 12, so the time was a bit urgent. Countries also need to prepare, so do we.”

The 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam in May has a total of 40 sports competitions, with 526 contents. As planned, the opening ceremony will take place on May 12, at My Dinh National Stadium. The closing ceremony will take place on May 23, at the Indoor Athletics Palace in Hanoi.
