Submitting UNESCO to recognize the festival of the goddess of Sam mountain as a human heritage

Vietnam will submit to UNESCO for consideration and inclusion of the goddess festival of Sam mountain (An Giang) on ​​the list of representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism is authorized to sign the dossier and submit it to UNESCO, under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, on March 31. The Vietnam National Committee for UNESCO will coordinate to carry out the necessary procedures.

The traditional festival of the goddess of Sam mountain has been preserved and practiced for generations in Chau Doc, An Giang. The festival brings the culture of the residents of the Southwest region, expressing the identity and succession of the Kinh community in the process of cultural exchange with the Chinese, Khmer and Cham.

Taking place at the end of the 4th lunar month, the festival has rituals such as procession of her statue from the top of the mountain to the shrine, her bathing ceremony, visiting the gods of Mr. economic, recovery. In 2014, the festival was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage.

In February, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed 14 intangible cultural heritages of Vietnam on the list of representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Heritage sites include Hue royal court music; cultural space of gongs in the Central Highlands; Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs; singing ca tru; Giong festival at Phu Dong and Soc temples; worshiping Hung Vuong in Phu Tho; the art of Southern Don Ca Tai Tu; folk songs, Nghe Tinh miles; rituals and games of tug of war; beliefs of the Vietnamese people worshiping Mother Goddesses of the Three Palaces; the art of Bai Choi in the Central region; Xoan singing; Then practice of the Tay, Nung, Thai and most recently Xoe Thai art.
