Taboos on Qingming New Year

Every year around the third lunar month, there is a period called Thanh Minh period. This is a meaningful holiday for Vietnamese people, and it is also an opportunity for children and grandchildren to remember their ancestors and deceased relatives.

According to the concept of many Eastern countries, the Qingming period is one of the 24 solar terms. Literally, sound is clear qi, and luminosity is bright. Thanh Minh means that the weather is cool and clear.

It is known that Thanh Minh is the 5th period of 24 annual gas periods. Tet Thanh Minh came 45 days after Lap Xuan, 105 days after the winter solstice. By convention, the Qingming Festival is a period that begins around April 4 or 5 at the end of the Spring Equinox and ends around April 20 or 21 of the solar calendar.

Thus, in 2022, Thanh Minh period will fall on April 5 (ie 5/3 of the lunar calendar) and last until April 20 when Coc Vu period begins. The Qingming Festival lasts about 15-16 days. The ancients chose the first day of the Qingming period to celebrate the Qingming Festival.

In addition to going to graves of ancestors and clans, during the Thanh Minh New Year, it is necessary to remember the following taboos to avoid bad luck.
