The “swarm of broken bees” ambushed, the 60km military convoy scattered?

Ambush military convoys Russia

A week after launching the operation in Ukraine, Russia set up a 60km military convoy to launch an overwhelming assault on Kiev from the north.

But the convoy of armored vehicles and supply vehicles was bogged down for several days, and the goal of breaking through the Ukrainian capital was also unsuccessful.

One of the factors that hindered the Russian military convoy came from night ambushes carried out by a team of 30 Ukrainian special forces soldiers and a group of drones on four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles. The Guardian quoted a Ukrainian commander as revealing.

The drone crew was selected from the Aerorozvidka aerial reconnaissance unit eight years ago, which is a group of volunteer IT professionals and hobbyists designing personal machines.

The unit’s commander, Lieutenant Colonel Yaroslav Honchar, told of an ambush near the town of Ivankiv that prevented a large-scale Russian attack.

He said Ukrainian fighters traveling in off-road vehicles could approach the Russian convoy at night by passing through the woods on either side of the road leading south to Kiev from the direction of Chernobyl.

Ukrainian fighters are equipped with night vision goggles, sniper rifles, remote-controlled mines, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras and others capable of dropping 1.5kg small bombs.

“A small unit during the night destroyed two or three leading vehicles of the Russian convoy, jamming the whole convoy. They stayed there for two more nights, destroying many other vehicles,” Honchar said.

He said the Russians had divided the convoy into smaller units to try to advance towards the Ukrainian capital, but the ambush team attacked the supply convoy, crippling the Russians’ ability to advance.

“The lead column of the Russian forces was trapped because there was not enough heat, no oil, no bombs and no gas. All that damage was done by the group of 30 men,” Honchar said.

The Aerorozvidka unit also claims to have helped thwart a Russian air attack on Hostomel airport, just northwest of Kiev on the first day of the war, using drones to locate, target and counter about 200 Russian paratroopers.

“That largely contributed to their inability to use the airfield to further develop their attack,” said Lieutenant Colonel Taras, one of Honchar’s aides.

All of the details in the statement have not been definitively verified, but US defense officials say the Ukrainian attacks contributed to the stopping of the Russian convoy around Ivankiv.

The large amount of aerial combat footage released by the Ukrainians also underscores the importance of drones in the country’s resistance operation.

In its early days, the unit used commercial drones, but the team of engineers, software designers and drone enthusiasts later developed their own designs. .

They built a series of surveillance drones, as well as large machines capable of dropping bombs and anti-tank grenades, and created a system called Delta, a network of sensors along the The front line is put on a digital map so that the commander can see the opponent’s movements.

However, Aerorozvidka also has difficulty in upgrading and replacing lost equipment, due to a lack of supply of components and restrictions on imports.

The unit is also looking to overcome Russian electronic warfare, which is partly being carried out in Ukraine in tandem with bombs, artillery shells and missiles.

Currently, Aerorozvidka usually waits for the Russians to turn off the jammer to start the drone. The unit then focused its fire on electronic warfare vehicles.

Honchar describes these technological battles and Aerorozvidka’s way of fighting as the future of warfare, in which small groups connected by trust and advanced technology can overwhelm larger enemies. , is more powerfully equipped.

“We are like a hive. One bee is nothing, but if you face a thousand, great force can be defeated. We are like bees, only the activity is different. At night”.
