The unexpected effect of cleaning the house

Cleaning the house is one of the simple ways to help people calm down, improve physical and mental health.

For Moushumi Khara, interior designer and founder of Hong Kong-based company The Lifestyle Editor, keeping a clean, tidy home is a form of self-care. Moushumi describes organizing the wardrobe, bedroom, and kitchen a few weeks a week as fascinating.

“Home is a sanctuary, I always try to make it an ideal place to live, work and relax,” she said. To keep the house tidy, Moushumi will sometimes sell or donate unnecessary items. She considers cleaning as a therapeutic method to help herself increase creativity and complete many tasks.

The designer truly believes that the living space has a great influence on the spirit. After a long day of work, returning to a neat and tidy house makes Moushumi calmer and more comfortable.

Many studies show that clutter can have a big impact on emotions. In 2011, Princeton University, USA, showed that living in a messy space, with many visual stimuli (dirty clothes piled up, unwashed dishes) makes the brain overwhelmed, tired, incapacitated. ability to concentrate and work less efficiently.

Or study published in 2010 in the newsletter Social Psychology and Personality, people who describe their homes as “messy” and “full of unfinished projects” are easily bored, have high levels of stress. than those who said the house was “tidy” and “peaceful”.

In particular, focusing on housework can soothe emotions. Research published in the journal Mindfulness in 2014 found that people who liked to wash dishes reported a 27% reduction in anxiety levels.

Housework helps people be more active. According to the American Heart Association, 20 minutes of vacuuming is equivalent to walking 1.6 km. While folding blankets, clothes or moving items across rooms is the best way to stay in shape and burn more calories.

Dr Lim Boon Leng, a neurologist in Singapore, says other benefits of doing housework are increased feelings of satisfaction, confidence and improved mood. “The reason is because clutter makes you feel guilty, blame yourself for being lazy and irresponsible,” said Dr. Lim.

In addition, designer and co-founder of The Happy Space Nassim Secci, said that using color, spending time designing living spaces brings a sense of peace and has an effective emotional recovery effect. A 2018 study from the University of North Florida, USA found that people who enjoy planting and arranging flowers indoors have good mental health and report lower stress levels.

Another study, published in 2015 in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, revealed that houseplants can help people feel comfortable and soothe the soul. “Being in nature makes you feel relaxed and benefits from it,” says Secci.

Unlike most people who like to clean, some say they are depressed and overwhelmed when they have to clean their house regularly. “If that’s the case, calmly change,” Lim said.

According to the doctor, forcing yourself to do something you don’t want to do can easily lead to guilt and worsen your depression. So start with cleaning the dishes, sweeping the floor… Over time, you can try to do more as your mental health improves.

Over the years, Moushumi has helped many people get their homes organized. She understands the challenges involved in keeping a place clean, organized and life-balanced, but emphasizes that people shouldn’t make it difficult for themselves if they’re struggling with a hectic work schedule.

“Perfection is not a problem. You should not judge yourself because there are messy things lying around. Do what you feel comfortable in your own home,” said the designer.
