RT station (Russia) and Xinhua News Agency (China) reported, after Slovenia reopened its embassy in UkraineSlovenian diplomats received a strange request from the host country government: remove the national flag.
The reason given by the Ukrainian side is that the Slovenian flag looks too similar to the flag of the Russian Federation.
Specifically, in an interview with Slovenian television, Charge d’Affaires Bostjan Lesjak recounted his feelings on the day the Embassy was reopened:
“When we arrived in Kyiv, it was quite windy outside, and we proudly raised the flag of Slovenia and the flag of the European Union back in the day – those flags fluttering in the wind.”
However, Mr. Lesjak said, about two days later, it was no longer windy outside and the flags had dropped – at that time the Slovenian flag with its blue, red and white colors really looked very much like the Russian flag.
The only difference is that the Slovenian flag has the country’s coat of arms, but this detail can only be seen when the flag is spread on a flat surface or stretched in the wind.
Not long after that, the Slovenian Embassy was “visited” by the Ukrainian National Guard. They asked if the Slovenian embassy could “temporarily remove the country’s flag, because it looks too much like the Russian flag”.
Then, the Slovenian Embassy followed this request.
Earlier, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced the return of the country’s diplomats in Kyiv. Slovenia said that “Ukraine is in need of direct diplomatic support to help end Russia’s aggression and restore peace as soon as possible”.
On March 15, Prime Minister Jansa, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala are said to have visited Ukraine’s capital Kyiv to show support for the country.
It is known that after this visit, the Slovenian leader voiced his support for Ukraine to become a member of the EU as soon as possible.
