In one survey, only a third of participants knew blood in their stools was a sign of colorectal cancer.

Also according to the survey, women recognize the symptoms of colorectal cancer better than men.

Charlene White, a donor to Colorectal Cancer UK, said: ‘It’s been 20 years since I lost my mother to colorectal cancer when she was 47 years old.

“Over time, there has been a lot of progress in treatments, but it’s important that people recognize the symptoms and act quickly.”

“People who are diagnosed with cancer at an early stage have a much higher chance of successful treatment than people whose cancer has spread.”

“If you have any symptoms, don’t be ashamed and don’t ignore them,” Ms White urged.

Early recognition helps to increase the effectiveness of treatment

Colorectal cancer is treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.

Nearly everyone diagnosed in the earliest stages survives a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, but survival rates drop dramatically as the disease progresses to the later stages.

Recognizing the main symptom and seeing a doctor early can help increase your chances of survival.

Dr Philippa Kaye, a British general practitioner with colorectal cancer, added: “As a GP and someone who has had colorectal cancer, I fully understand that it can be scary sometimes. when you go to the doctor”.

“However, it’s important that you make an appointment as soon as possible – please don’t feel embarrassed, don’t ignore any symptoms.”

“As GPs, we see a lot of people with bowel problems and if you’re worried something is wrong, we’d love to see you. Early diagnosis can save your life.”

In the UK, almost 43,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, that’s almost 120 every day.

Dr Lisa Wilde, Director of Research and External Affairs at Colorectal Cancer UK, said: “Crectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the UK and It’s shocking that people don’t know the symptoms to look out for.”
