Conte was the best in Serie A last season

Beating his colleague Stefano Pioli of Milan with one vote, Antonio Conte was voted the best Serie A coach for the 2020-2021 season.

“I’m very pleased that this is an award voted for by my colleagues. I want to share this award with the members and players who helped me create a memorable journey at Inter last season.” Conte said while receiving the Panchina d’Oro (Golden Bench) award – for the best coach of the season – in London on March 31.

Conte took office in the summer of 2019, helping Inter made great progress in two years, finished second and won the scudetto for the first time in a decade in the 2020-2021 season, thereby ending Juventus’ nine years of dominance. But not long after the winning team, Conte clashed with Inter owners about the club’s development plan. Both sides agreed to go their separate ways, and the Italian coach got it compensation $8.6 million for the remaining year of the contract. By November 2021, he accepted the invitation to come to England to be the head coach Tottenham.

Conte received 20 votes for Panchina d’Oro, while Pioli received 19 votes. Third place went to Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini with eight votes from colleagues. Last season, Milan finished second with 79 points, while Atalanta ranked third with 78 points, equal to Juventus.

This is the fourth time Conte has won the Serie A Coach of the Year award, after three consecutive times in 2012, 2013, 2014 during his time at Juventus, thereby equaling Max Allegri’s record. Conte also received the best coach award when he helped Bari win Serie B – Italy’s second division – in 2009, and received a special certificate of merit in 2018 when he and Chelsea won the English Premier League.

In addition to the Serie A best male coach award, as every year, the organizers also awarded the best male coach in Serie B, Serie C, the best female coach in Serie A, Serie B, and five-a-side football tournaments. In particular, Alessio Dionisi – Sassuolo’s current coach – was voted the best coach in Serie B last season when helping Empoli win and promote.

“Congratulations to Conte and today’s winners,” Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina said at the award ceremony. “This is a prestigious award renewed in the great tradition of Italian football. In a football that is constantly evolving, I hope that great coaches will be a driving force and an example for the next generation, especially the next generation. expertise and continuous innovation”.
