Countries that sell the most cars in the world 2021

The pandemic, lack of components, and the continued acceleration of the shift to electric vehicles are some of the prominent realities of the global car market in 2021. While worldwide auto sales are up 5%, reaching about 82.1 million vehicles (including cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles), not all markets recorded positive numbers. This result is also still lower than before the pandemic, of 89.6 million vehicles sold in 2019, according to Jato Dynamics.

China remains at the top of the rankings, with 26.3 million vehicles, up 4% from 2020 and 6% from 2019. Manufacturing troubles have not hit the country as hard as in other regions. .

But the case with the United States is different. Despite recording a recovery in 2021 (up 4% compared to 2020), only 15 million cars were sold, less than 17 million cars in 2019.

The rest of the Top 10 have in common that sales of less than 5 million vehicles in 2021. But the increase or decrease compared to the business results of 2020 is very different. India has the largest increase in the Top 10, compared to 2020, with 26%. South Korea and Germany shared the largest decline, at 9%.

The top 10 also recorded the disappearance of Italy when the country dropped to 12th and ranked after Russia. In particular, if counting the European region alone, Germany holds the throne despite a decrease in sales compared to the previous year.

In 2021, the explosion of electric vehicles is not enough to offset the negative effects on the whole market in the past few years. Pure electric vehicles account for only 3% of total auto sales in the US, compared with 11% in China and 10% in Europe.
