The object from the early universe is the most distant star the Hubble space telescope has ever captured: 28 billion light-years away.

According to Live Science magazine, the star was nicknamed “Earendel”, the Old English word for “Morning Star”, because it was one of the objects that belonged to the dawn of the universe. Its official name is WHL0137-LS.

Earendel is located 28 billion light-years from Earth, but a lucky coincidence helped Hubble “catch” it during a 9-hour exposure, because this ancient star happens to be behind a galaxy cluster.

Gravity from the massive galaxies in the foreground distorts space-time, creating a gravitational lens-like effect that magnifies the star’s light tens of thousands of times, enough for devices to of Hubble captured.

Earendel can be 50-500 times more massive than the Sun and millions of times brighter. However, as the universe expanded after the Big Bang, it is now 28 billion light-years away.
