The recent incident of a mother murdering her child in Hai Duong has once again sparked alarm about the problem of depression, especially in postpartum and breastfeeding women.

Prior to the above incident, MSc Bui Phuong Thao (Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital) said postpartum depression is a case of depression that starts within 30 days after a woman gives birth.

Postpartum depression in women is explained by sudden changes in hormones and environment after delivery, with sudden and often severe onset. “Suicidal intentions and behavior and child-killing behavior are common in postpartum depression and are very dangerous. Most mothers believe that killing children and committing suicide is for liberation, so that life is less miserable. It is worth mentioning that postpartum depression often recurs in subsequent births,” said Doctor Phuong Thao.

So how to detect women with postpartum depression? Doctor Phuong Thao said that relatives need to be aware of any suspicious signs, so that they can intervene or visit a doctor in time to avoid unfavorable consequences.

Here are the signs of postpartum depression shared by Dr. Bui Phuong Thao:

– Ideas and behaviors of killing children: After giving birth, a woman thinks that the birth of a child is a burden to the family, the cause of her suffering, so she has the idea and behavior of killing her child to ease her suffering, she will die and take her child. , because if the child stays, will be a burden, will suffer when there is no mother around.

In particular, when a mother exhibits any of the above symptoms, she should be taken to the hospital with a psychiatrist specialist for timely treatment to avoid unfavorable cases.
