After the day of national reunification, on March 30, 1977, the two provinces of Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa merged to form Phu Khanh province, and Nha Trang town was elevated to a city according to Decision No. 391- of the Government Council. On July 1, 1989, the two provinces of Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa were separated, Nha Trang is the city of Khanh Hoa province. On April 22, 2009, Nha Trang city became a grade 1 city directly under Khanh Hoa province.
