No special classes, no extra lessons, 11th grade boys got 8.0 IELTS from the first test

That is Nguyen Manh Dung (2005), studying in class 11D1, Nguyen Gia Thieu High School, Hanoi. The male student shared that he had learned English by himself and consulted his older sister.

In this first test, Manh Dung achieved 8.0 IELTS overall, in which Listening skill got a perfect score of 9.0, Reading 8.5, Speaking 7.5 and Writing 6.5. She said that although some of her sub-scores were not up to expectations, she was quite satisfied with her scores.

Manh Dung shared that he was oriented to learning English from a very early age. “Since the second grade, I have been learning English and have a background. My sister is also a national excellent student, achieving 8.0 IELTS from grade 11 so she often tutors her to study,” Dung said.

It wasn’t until 10th grade that Dung really studied to prepare for the IELTS exam. Every day, he spent about 5 hours just learning English. She said that the whole process of studying and reviewing was self-study, consulted online documents and had her sister’s help, but absolutely did not go to extra classes. Dung’s mother shared that the family did not allow Dung to study at the center with foreigners, he practiced all 4 skills of IELTS at home.

In the beginning, Dung focused on Listening and Reading because these 2 skills are the easiest to score. Male students only use online reference materials from native teachers, review, do the test and then check the answers, such as Cambridge IELTS practice set, Destination C1&C2, Simon IELTS…

I share that I find listening practice not too difficult because I have learned the habit of active listening. Every day, Dung often listens to Recording lessons in review books and speech programs such as TEDTalk online.

“I personally feel that the more you listen to it, the more you do it, the scores will gradually improve. I realize that listening often helps me shape the correct usage of words in context and how it connects with the rest of the words in the sentence,” Dung affirmed.

In skills Reading, Dung told me to do up to 9 readings a day so as not to be fooled by the question. Manh Dung feels that the Multiple Choice section is the “most sweet” part and my strategy is to try to eliminate all completely wrong answers. In addition, the Matching Headings part is also a difficult part and Dung usually saves the end of the lesson and does the Fill in the blanks first.

At the final stage of burning, Dung switched to reviewing all skills. “I find that skewing each skill score won’t help much and I hope all 4 of my skills are roughly equal.”

Although he did not go to the English center, for Dung, learning Writing and Speaking for IELTS is not too hard because of the help from her excellent sister.

Dung consulted many different English learning and IELTS practice books, including Mr. Simon’s material. Male students draw their own skills, select good and short sentences to be able to apply in their test. In addition, the male student said that books like Destination C1&C2 helped increase vocabulary in a specific context and improve grammar.

Manh Dung often emailed his sister his articles for grading and evaluation. In the Speaking section, Manh Dung also did not take extra lessons with a native teacher. I self-study online, learn, record the answers and use the evening time to talk and practice with my sister.
